The Geneva Cargo Day Gala took place September 5, in Geneva-Switzerland. This event was created to celebrate the outcomes of the online Cargo Day fundraising event, providing an opportunity to witness the impact that the raised funds have had on saving lives in Africa. 

Hawa boarded the first Mercy Ship, the Anastasis, as a small child, when a tumor was slowly encroaching on her ability to eat and breathe. It was there that her life was saved, and a new dream was born. This year, Mercy Ships returns to Sierra Leone bringing life saving Hope to more people like Hawa.

For 12 years, Ibrahim Bangura has served his neighboring countries as a volunteer with Mercy Ships. Now, he’ll finally get the opportunity to help people in his own nation of SierraLeone. “I’m looking forward to seeing the first patient climbing the gangway, coming to receive surgery on board,” he said. “That will completely bring so much peace in me and joy.”

The world’s largest purpose-built civilian hospital ship, the Global Mercy®, is projected to serve 150,000 patients over the next five decades – and it all begins with Amadou, a 4-year-old with a windswept leg and bowed leg from southern Senegal. With an orthopedic surgery on March 6, Amadou was the first patient to ever receive surgery on board the new ship.
