CARGO DAY ANNUAL REPORT 2024
ANOTHER EXEPTIONAL YEAR

Since its inception in 2016, Mercy Ships Cargo Day has united the Shipping and Trading community in an extraordinary fundraising effort, generating over $15 million for Mercy Ships‘ vital work.

The initiative operates through a unique model where charterers designate “Mercy Cargoes” to shipbrokers, who then donate 50% or more of their commissions to Mercy Ships, with additional support coming from shipowners, ship agents, and other maritime companies.

Despite challenging market conditions in 2024, the campaign maintained its upward momentum, raising $2.2 million from 83 companies, even more impressively the number of Mercy Cargoes increased by 26% and pledges by 29% compared to the previous year including 14 new additional organisations joining the movement. While the Tanker sector remains the main contributor to this initiative, contributions from the Dry Bulk sector more than doubled.

As in previous years, Mercy Ships partners matched the total raised. In a separate but related initiative, Eastern Pacific Shipping’s annual “To the Moon” sports event generated an additional $1.5 million for Mercy Ships in memory of Tim Webb.

Fudias Story

For seven years, Fudia’s family tried to find a cure for her bowed legs. Her mother brought her to Freetown with the hope of healing but shortly after, she became an orphan, and her uncle stepped in to care for her. A few years later, the #GlobalMercy docked in Freetown and her uncle took her to be evaluated. She was cleared for surgery and finally received the treatment her mother had worked so hard to find. Rehabilitation was a long road, but she was resilient and determined.

Fudia can now walk by herself without struggling and is set to resume school, with hopes for the future set high. “I want to be a doctor so that I can help other people,” she said.
