Geneva Cargo Day Gala
September 19, 2024
At the Bâtiment des Forces Motrices in Geneva, over 400 guests from the shipping and trading community invited by the GVA Cargo Day Committee, celebrated the outstanding results of the 2023 Cargo Day.
David Walker, Chairman of the Geneva Cargo Day Committee and Head of Chartering at Sahara Group, congratulated the 90 shipping companies who raised 2.2M$ in 2023 matched by a group of Mercy Ships partners with 2 additional million $ for a total of 4.2M$. A touching moment of remembrance of Tim Webb, former Global Head of Tankers at BRS Shipbrokers and founder of Mercy Ships Cargo Day, which passed away earlier this year, was to invite the audience to do a “Mercy Ships” hug Tim’s style.
The Trophy Ceremony awarded the following companies: Honorary Committee Trophy to Trafigura (Andrea Olivi), Charterer of the Year to ST Shipping (John Marsh), Broker of the Year to Riverlake (Marc Lecoanet), Owner of the Year to Scorpio (Simon Winthrop), and Dry Bulk Contributor to Oldendorff (Robert Bancroft).
Gilbert Walter, CEO & Chair of BRS Shipbrokers, board member of Mercy Ships International and Mercy Ships Switzerland, highlighted the long-lasting partnership between Mercy Ships and MSC and announced the construction of a new hospital ship.
Kim Manciani, MSC Foundation Senior PR & Communication Manager, underlined the common purpose shared with the NGO in having a positive impact in the lives of children and adults in need.
The Auction led by Auctioneer Marcello de Marco was one of the highlights of the gala. The donated ship models and a jersey #9 signed by Erling Haaland raised a total of 171.000CHF which will be doubled by Mercy Ships partners.
