Supporters of Mercy Ships’ Cargo Day turned out in force for a “thank you” Geneva lakeside gala ball.

More than 250 guests toasted the raising of $673,000 at the 2017 event and a total of $1m in the two years since Cargo Day was launched.

Special guests at the Hotel Beau-Rivage included Diego Aponte, president and chief executive of Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Co, and Guillaume Barazzone, a member of the lower house of the Swiss parliament.

Also at the event was Hu Xiang, president of Tianjin Xingang Shipyard, which is constructing a new purpose-built hospital vessel for Mercy Ships. Per Westling, managing director of Stena RoRo, which has been involved in the concept design and newbuilding supervision, outlined progress on the new ship, Global Mercy. Brokers and traders, including members of the organising committee, who visited the existing ship, Africa Mercy, in Cameroon last month recounted their experience onboard during the ball. Cargo Day supporter awards were made to Trafigura (Best
Charterer), BRS (Best Broker) and Louis Dreyfus (Highest Donation).

TradeWinds received a special award as Cargo Day partner.

Committee chairman Tim Webb described Cargo Day as a “unique event where the shipping and trading community work together for a common goal”. A third event is planned for October.
