78 SHIPPING AND TRADING COMPANIES BREAK ALL-TIME RECORD FOR CHARITY WITH 2 MILLION RAISED!

Nearly $2,000,000 was raised for the charity Mercy Ships with 57 Mercy Cargoes,16 address commissions and 41 pledges donated in 2022. This is a record amount since Mercy Ships Cargo Day started in 2016.

These increased results are due to the generosity of 30 charterers, 19 shipbrokers, 25 shipowners, 3 port agents, 3 consulting and other shipping companies.

In the past seven years, the shipping community raised almost $7Million through the online fundraising event “Mercy Ships Cargo Day” to save lives in Africa through safe surgery.

Founded in 1978, Mercy Ships delivers much needed free healthcare to many of the world’s most vulnerable countries via its network of hospital ships which have worked in more than 55 countries and provided medical services valued at more than £1.3 billion.

Tim Webb Head of Tankers BRS Geneva said, “I would like to thank all the shipping and trading companies that have participated in Cargo Day. Raising more than USD 1.9 million this past year for Mercy Ships is a fantastic achievement. The record amount raised is great and timely as the newly built hospital ship, the Global Mercy™ will soon start operating in parallel with the existing hospital ship the Africa Mercy®.”

There were participation from 15 companies in the dry bulk sector and for the first time, and we received a donation from an LNG shipping transaction courtesy of SSY, which resulted in a 161% increase in funds compared to 2021.”

Victor Boutrolle, Shipbroker BRS Geneva said, “How exciting to see the dry bulk segment getting more involved with the Mercy Ship’s Cargo Day. Mercy Ships is a fantastic project, a noble one that has taken a major step in the industry to help so many in need around the globe. This year, the dry bulk players have been more than ever a great part of this amazing fundraising effort that tankers and others in the shipping community have held up since 2016. Thanks for your participation to this life-changing event. Glad to have more and more shipping friends onboard. Let’s keep up the great job together!”

Toby Dunipace, SSY’s Managing Director of LNG states; “I’m delighted that both ST Shipping and SSY’s LNG desk have been able to contribute to this very worthwhile charity. An LNG shipping contribution to Mercy Ships is a new initiative and we are very happy to support such a good cause. Through the work that they do, Mercy Ships have literally changed thousands of lives for the better so to be able to help in this small way is an honor in itself”.

Also speaking on the donation, Alex Budiev at ST Shipping commented, “We are proud to be part of the great initiative while encouraging more participants from the LNG market to get involved this year.”

Corinne Kemp, Communication Manager for Mercy Ships Cargo Day said, “We are so impressed by the amazing effort the shipping & trading community is giving to support our work in Africa, to impact lives together. On behalf of all our volunteers and patients, Mercy Ships and the Cargo Day committees, we thank you, our generous shipping & trading partners.  On behalf of all those we serve, Mercy Ships is very grateful.”
