The outstanding work of doctors and nurses on board hospital ship Africa Mercy is to be portrayed during a documentary series broadcast on SBS.

Episode one of “The Surgery Ship” premiers on Tuesday 27 November and follows the Australian (and other) doctors and nurses on board the ship as they perform life-saving surgery and medical treatment to vulnerable populations off the coast of Africa.

This eight-part series takes an in-depth look at the stories of the volunteer doctors and nurses making life and death decisions every day.

Series producer Madeleine Hetherton said they were overwhelmed by the response to the documentary.

“We knew that there were more stories to be told about the incredible, life-saving work undertaken on board the Africa Mercy,” Ms Hetherton said.

“Making the series has enabled us to revisit some of the volunteers and patients featured in The Surgery Ship, as well as take a closer look at day to day life on the ship.”

Mercy Ships Founder Don Stephens said for 40 years Mercy Ships had provided free surgeries in developing nations.

“It is a great honour that the series The Surgery Ship will shine a light on the surgical needs in Africa by showcasing the work on board our hospital ship, the Africa Mercy,” Mr Stephens said.
